Dirty collars, grey cuffs and red soil marks. Here's a simple weekly routine to keep school uniforms bright white all term, using Ecowash washing powder.
White school uniforms get dirty fast. Between the walk to school, break time and the journey home, shirts and blouses pick up sweat, dust and red soil almost every day. The good news: with the right routine, they can stay bright all term.
Why uniforms turn grey
- Collars and cuffs collect body oil and sweat, which traps dirt.
- Red soil and dust settle deep into the fabric if they are left to dry.
- Washing with coloured clothes slowly dulls whites.
- Too little powder, or not rinsing well, leaves residue that looks grey.
Step by step
- Sort first. Wash white uniforms on their own, never with coloured clothes.
- Shake out the dust. Shake off dry soil outside before the uniform gets wet, so it doesn't turn into mud in the water.
- Pre-treat collars and cuffs. Wet them, rub on a little Ecowash powder mixed with water, and scrub gently with a soft brush.
- Soak. Dissolve Ecowash powder in a bucket of warm (not hot) water and soak the uniforms for 30 minutes to an hour.
- Wash and rinse well. Wash by hand or machine, then rinse until the water runs clear, because leftover soap makes whites look dull.
- Dry in the sun, inside out. Sunlight helps keep whites bright. Turning them inside out protects the fabric.
Keep them white all term
- Wash soon. Don't leave a sweaty uniform in the basket for days.
- For cotton whites only, a small amount of bleach in the soak can help. Always check the care label first.
- Have two or three uniforms so each one gets a proper wash, not a rushed one.
- Iron on the correct setting. Scorch marks are harder to fix than dirt.
